Ep 111. Defending Indigenous Rights and NAIDOC Week
First to air on 2ser 8th July 2010
Presented by James
Presented by James
This week is NAIDOC week, a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Whilst NAIDOC week is now largely a celebration, its past is strongly linked with Indigenous protests against colonialism and discrimination. Thus it is fitting that during this NAIDOC week Indigenous groups in the Northern Territory have organised the “'Defending Indigenous Rights: Land, Law, Culture ' Convergence. The conference is a meeting of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people from all over the country to discuss the implications of the Northern Territory 'Intervention' and ongoing human rights abuses and discrimination of Aboriginal peoples.
The Third Degrees Jess and Tessa are in Alice Springs for the Conference and have brought us audio from a couple of speakers who spoke at a NAIDOC event in Alice this week ahead of the 'Defending Indigenous Rights' Conference. During the show this week you will hear from Barbara Shaw, who is from the Nancy Town Camp outside of Alice Springs and Steve Gumerungi Hodder, senior journalist at central Australian aboriginal media association.
In this week Show we also played the following great song by the PI Boyz - Aboriginal Justice. It was produced with Desert Pea Media and Smugglers of Light.

Ep 110. Resources Super Profit Tax and G20 in Toronto, Canada

First to air: 01/07/2010
Presented by James and Libby
Resources Super Profits Tax
Julia Gillard has been meeting with mining executives over the past couple of days to negotiate further about the Resources Super Profit Tax. Mining companies have said that the proposed 40 percent tax rate is unreasonable. But how this could even work is uncertain, as the resources tax was expected to contribute over $1 billion in revenue to the budgets of 2012 and 2013.
The Third Degrees Libby King caught up with John Hepburn from Greenpeace to discuss what the resources tax under Rudd might have looked like, and how may change in the future.
Toronto G20 Summit
Canada played host to a meeting of the G20. The G20 has been described as a meeting of leaders from the richest and most powerful nations, as well as leaders and elites from selected southern countries. Remarkably during the summit, this week the executives of the world’s richest corporations were also given a seat alongside prime ministers and presidents in deciding the G20’s global economic agenda.
Democracy Now have been covering the summit in depth and on the show we played an interview Amy Gooman conducted with Indigenous leader Art Manuel, former Chief of the Neskonlith Band in British Columbia and spokesperson for the Indigenous Network on Economies and Trade, joins us to talk about the struggle for indigenous rights and sovereignty in the context of the G20 summit. Visit Democracynow.com for the full interview and more coverage of the G20 summit.

A roving street party in newtown! It's about time that we celebrate our community, local art & music, and the potenial of our neighbourhoods. Together we can see our public streets as meeting places and open areas of community engagement instead of transit routes dominated by cars. The goal is to have a totally free community event celebrating vibrant local creativity. There will be bands, sound systems and installations along the way, ending up in a beautiful lost alleyway of the inner west. Bring your friends, drums, mobile sound systems, couches on wheels, bikes, skateboards, picnic rugs and drinks. Meet at The HUB in Newtown Square, opposite the train station at 2pm.

The truth about January 26th: Invasion Day
While many across the nation were wearing the union jack and drinking beer, there were other commemorations marking the day of the arrival of the First Fleet and the hositing of the British flag. To the First Peoples of this land (over 500 different language groups), January 26th marks the invasion of their traditional lands and the beginning of 222 years of imposed colonial rule. The Aboriginal Tent Embassy, Canberra, is a protest camp on the lawns of Old Parliment House that has been publicly declaring sovereignty over the country of the Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri peoples since 1972. Every year there is a march from Canberra city centre to the Tent Embassy. This year the Tent Embassy and its supporters contnued to speak-up for self-determination and recognition of past injustices. On today's show Hannah has a yarn about her visit to the Embassy on this day of remembering.
Yabun Festival was also held on the 26th January as an alternitive celebration known as "Survival Day". Victoria Park, Sydney, became a place to celebrate Indigenous cultues, showcasing the best in Indigenous music, dance, sport, politics, literature, art and craft. Libby went along and gives us the low-down on the grooves of the day.
New Way Summit: Our Way or No Way
Michael Anderson, leader of the Euahlayi people and former Black Power member and one of the original founders of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, is organising the New Way Summit: Our Way or No Way to discuss many of the issue facing Aboriginal people today. Some of the issues discussed will include the shutting down of self-determined Aboriginal programs, the quarantining of welfare, the increased presence of police in Indigenous communities and the continued denial of lands rights.
The 3rd Degree's Libby King spoke with Michael Anderson about the upcoming summit, which will bw held in Canberra from January 30th to February 1st. For more info see wgar.info
