The first in a planned series - The Carbon Kerfuffle: Critical Discussions on Climate Change Policy.

Over the last two decades the policy response to climate change has been dominated by market mechanisms, and almost exclusively by emissions trading schemes, and in the last year the three major political parties in Australia have all stated they believe a ‘price on carbon’ is inevitable. On today’s show we start at the beginning: what are these policies? Where do they come from and how did they come to dominate the action and discourse of responses to climate change?

To discuss this we are joined in the studio by Rebecca Pearse, PhD candidate researching emissions trading at the University of NSW.

We also speak to Elizabeth Humphrys, co-editor of the political blog Left Flank, about how emission trading schemes are a continuation of the same neoliberal philosophy that has helped to create such massive environmental & social problems in the first place.
