Eraring expansion protest
50 people attended a climate protest at Australian Labor Party Headquarters in Sussex Street on Tuesday morning. The group were expressing anger at the recent NSW Government budget which will pave the way for further expansion of coal power in the state.
Included in last week's State Budget, the NSW Government was more than $200 million allocated to the expansion of Eraring power station. The Eraring Power Station, on Lake Macquarie south of Newcastle, is the equal largest power station in Australia, and the expansion would see the capacity of Eraring increase from 2640MW to 2880MW.
The Third Degree’s Rebecca Pearse spoke with Rising Tide member Steve Phillips during the protest.
Expansion of Lake Cowal
The NSW Land and Environment court has demanded an injunction on the expansion of the Lake Cowal gold mine in western NSW. The Canadian company that owns the mine, Barrick Gold, are contesting the decision.
The Third Degree's Andy Small reports.
